Summary Windows 3 is the predecessor to Windows 95, and is considered obsolete today. It was the first widely used GUI on the PC platform. Windows 3.x requires a DOS be installed first, as it cannot operate without DOS. The last edition, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 offered networking capabilities as well. Some editions included MS-DOS as part of the total package.
